JAPAN

ARASHIMAYA BAMBOO FOREST
Arashiyama is a district on the western outskirts of the city, and it is where you can find an array of temples and landmarks. One of the district’s most popular attractions, however, is undoubtedly the famed bamboo forest. This is an amazing, almost surreal experience where you can stand next to thousands, or perhaps millions, of green bamboo stalks growing straight up into the sky. To top it all off, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is home to a number of monkeys who are quite friendly and will come greet you as you stroll along the grove.

Those bamboos are tall and makes you feel small about yourself but it radiates that positive vibe that makes you feel happy. No picture can capture the feeling of standing in the midst of this sprawling bamboo grove – the whole thing has a palpable sense of otherness that is quite unlike that of any normal forest we know of. If you think that great, there`s more. Every season, obviously, you`ll see different views.

Not only is it beautiful at day time, but it`s also breathtaking during night time too. Lights are lit up and you will see a spectacular view of our mother nature that you want to see every day, or rather, should I say at night?

You can rent a bike or stroll the path to enjoy the beautiful sight of sunlight shining through the bamboo grove, casting soft shadows on the path. Especially when the wind blows through, you can see moving images exuding a tranquil feel. That is the true charm of these forests of the east. Strolling though the bamboo forest will cost you nothing. You just have to prepare yourself and your camera to take this wonderful path.

You can access it directly from the main street of Arashiyama, a little to the north of the entrance to Tenryu-ji Temple, but it’s best paired with a visit to that temple, exit the north gate, take a left and you’ll be in the grove in no time. There’s just one main path through the grove, which leads slowly uphill.
